Drunk Driving Car Accidents In Miami: Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over Campaign Aims To Reduce Risks

DUI3

Drunk driving car accidents in Miami leave hundreds of people in our area suffering serious, potentially life-threatening personal injuries each year. As the summer dies down, state and federal officials are focusing on reducing the risks. The national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign raises awareness while helping get impaired drivers off the road.

The Dangers Of Drunk Driving In Miami

A local teen was recently sentenced for a horrific New Year’s drunk driving accident in Miami that claimed the lives of four people. According to a July 21, 2023 NBC 6 news report, the 18-year-old young man was found guilty of six DUI-related charges and is required to serve a 14 year jail sentence while making payments to a victim’s compensation fund.

The accident happened in 2021 when the teen, who was driving his mother’s Chevy Tahoe on a section of West Flagler, t-boned another vehicle. The crash claimed the lives of the vehicle’s driver and three passengers, all of who were in their early 20’s, while sending two other people to local hospital emergency rooms with severe personal injuries. The then 16-year-old Chevy driver was found to have been driving over 110 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone and had a blood alcohol content level well over the legal limit.

Unfortunately, these types of tragic crashes are not uncommon in our area. The Florida Department of Highway Safety And Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reports that DUI crashes in Miami-Dade County injure close to 200 people each year while claiming the lives of nearly two dozen other victims.

Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over

DUI crashes in Miami can happen at any time of year, but are particularly common during the summer months and over Labor Day weekend. To raise awareness of the risks and reduce the likelihood of drunk driving accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) holds its Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over campaign at this time each year.

In 2023, the campaign kicks off on August 17 and runs through September 5. During this time, the NHTSA partners with local and state agencies to increase law enforcement on the road while using social media and other means to make people more aware of the hazards. While the legal limit for drunk driving is a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 or greater, having any amount of alcohol in your system can impact your vision, coordination, reflexes, and judgment, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
