Reduce Your Risk Of Car Accidents In Miami On I-95

I_95_Miami

I-95 is one of the most iconic roads in the country. It runs north-south along the entire west coast, from the Canadian border in Maine down to U.S. Route 1 in Miami. Hundreds of thousands of people rely on it when visiting our area and many locals use it as part of their daily commute. Unfortunately, in addition to being one of the longest roads in the U.S., it is also one of the most dangerous. Read more about common causes of car accidents in Miami on I-95 and ways to reduce your risks.

I-95: One Of The Deadliest Roads In The Country

Taking I-95 is something many drivers dread and for good reason. According to a recent Miami New Times, the section near I-595 in Broward County, an area many Miami drivers travel to regularly, is one you particularly want to avoid. Known as the “deadliest mile in America”, it has the highest rate of fatal crashes in the country. Factors that make it and other areas of I-95 in South Florida so dangerous:

  • The high rate of speed most drivers travel;
  • The high number of tourists, who are more likely to make driving mistakes;
  • Complicated entrance and exit ramps, which confuse even local drivers;
  • Poor visibility of both the road and traffic signs.

Since the report was published in March 2022, nearly a dozen car accidents have happened in the area. These can prove deadly for drivers and pedestrians, such as in the case of Steelers Quarterback Dwayne Haskins. An April 11, 2022 Miami Herald News report states that Haskins, in town for spring training, was fatally struck while attempting to cross I-595 between the I-95 North and South exits.

Protecting Yourself Against Car Accidents On I-95

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System lists I-95 as the second deadliest highway in the country. The section in Miami-Dade county is one of the most heavily traveled and has the highest number of car accidents per mile. Whether you are local and rely on the interstate to get to work or a visitor, take precautions to reduce your accident risks:

  • Obey all posted speed limits;
  • Give other drivers plenty of space and avoid aggressive driving, such as tailgating and improper passing;
  • Do not respond to gestures or challenges from other motorists;
  • Be alert for construction zones;
  • Watch for changes in weather, that could make conditions more treacherous;
  • Avoid driving distractions, such as texting or talking on phones;
  • If a crash occurs or your vehicle breaks down, avoid standing or walking on the interstate and notify the police right away.
