Rollover Car Accidents In Miami: Know Your Risks

car-accident-lawyer2

Speeding, running red lights, and driving impaired are all common causes of car accidents in Miami. However, they can also happen due to less obviously reckless driving behaviors, weather and road conditions at the time, or even the type of vehicle you drive. Rollover car accidents are one of the most potentially dangerous types of crashes. Our Miami car accident lawyer explains some of the causes and how you can reduce your risks.

Miami Rollover Accidents: Know The Dangers

According to an October 2023 NBC Miami news report, a rollover car accident in Miami Gardens left at least one person suffering serious injuries. It happened at the intersection of Northwest 167th Street and 22nd Avenue. The vehicles involved included a Nissan SUV and a Toyota minivan.

Other than identifying the type of crash and stating that multiple vehicles were involved, police have revealed little other information. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the underlying and which of the drivers may be responsible.

Rollover accidents are common among larger vehicles, such as trucks, buses, minivans, and SUVs. The higher center of gravity makes them more likely to become unstable in certain scenarios. Factors that often contribute to rollover accidents in Miami include:

  • Road conditions: Sliding on loose gravel, swerving to avoid potholes, and navigating tight turns in the road increases rollover crash risks.
  • Weather conditions: Wet, slippery roads and reduced visibility are also common contributing factors in rollover accidents.
  • Dangerous driving: Driving too fast for conditions, tailgating, and improper passing are all common yet dangerous driving behaviors that make rollovers more likely to happen.
  • Vehicle defects: In some cases, design or manufacturing defects may be at least partially to blame for a rollover crash.

How To Reduce Miami Rollover Car Accident Risks

Vehicle height and weight distribution play a major role in rollover car accidents. As a result, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) carefully assesses these factors as part of its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). To protect yourself as a driver, enter the year, make, and model of your car on the NHTSA website and it will tell you whether rollovers are likely to pose a hazard.

If you drive a Jeep, SUV, pick-up truck, or other type of taller vehicle, be aware of steps you can take on your own to reduce the risks:

  • Give other motorists plenty of room on the road;
  • Be mindful of blind spots surrounding your own and other vehicles;
  • Signal well in advance of stopping, passing, making turns, or changing lanes;
  • Slow your speed when going around curves;
  • Use extra caution in wet, rainy weather;
